Business, Sex, and Morality We live in an area served by Adelphia [cable] and just saw its founder and his two sons on TV being arrested and hauled off in handcuffs, charged with defrauding his investors out of billions of dollars. When they bought their cable system here not too long ago they banned all of the adult channels because they conflicted with their "devoutly religious principles" and they didn't want to contribute to the decline of morality in the country. Is there something wrong with this picture? Just Wondering in California You might remember that these are also the people who bought full-page ads in newspapers attacking the illegal theft of cable channels. The strange relationship between sexual ethics and business ethics is not new, of course. Rupert Murdoch, one of the largest media owners in the world, espouses conservative values while cashing in on the profit-generating potential of sex. The FOX network, which is owns, is probably the most risqué of the major networks, while his FOX News is considered by many to be the most conservative. Murdoch can probably attribute much of his newspaper success to running photos of topless models in at least one of his daily newspapers in England. As the story goes, he wanted to do the same thing with one of his prominent U.S. newspapers, but his wife of the time strongly objected. Your final question is a good one. © 2005, All Rights Reserved
