Rewritten from email Politics Dictating Research Findings I'm a graduate assistant for a professor whose in charge of millions of dollars of research for a large university. (I can't name the university because of possible repercussions.) As part of our indoctrination were were given a lecture on writing research proposals. The professor handed out a list of forbidden words. These are words which, because of the current administration's ties to the Religious-Right, we can't use in our research proposals. Our professor then went on to explain how the findings of many good studies have been removed of government web sites because they do not support the Religious-Right's agenda. I always thought that universities were the one place where truth and the pursuit of truth were paramount. But now I even hear that some conservative students are being encouraged to report professors who are "too liberal." When I questioned my professor on all this he showed me this clipping from a newspaper.
As if this weren't enough, we've been told that some institutions and agencies that have published ideas that were contrary to the current administration's views have found themselves singled out for investigation by the government. What kind of a country is the U.S. becoming?
