A Very Distorted Sexual Morality

My friend's favorite TV programs are CSI and Law&Order Special Victims' Unit — both of which regularly deal with sexual perversions, torture, rape, and death.

At the same time he feels the government should do something about Janet Jackson's three-second breast exposure and all "the sex and smut on TV."

So—let me repeat this because it's hard to understand—we have a man (and much of the U.S. TV audience) that's okay with seeing the graphic details surrounding the sexual torture, rape and the killing of women (it's called prime-time entertainment), but says it should be illegal to show such things as woman's breast, or loving and pleasurable sex acts between adults.

Can someone please explain what kind of  "morality" this is?

Backing up what you say is a recent study done by Jennifer Aubrey of the University of Missouri.  She analyzed 84 hours of one-hour prime-time television shows broadcast between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on ABC, CBS, NBC, the WB, and UPN. Aubery found that during these 84 hours there were 676 scenes containing sexual references and of these:

  • Only four percent resulted in positive consequences
  • 60 percent of the time when negative repercussions ensued (which was most of the time), the sex was initiated by a woman

Somehow this doesn't sound like "reality TV."
